Avenue Q is a musical comedy featuring puppets and human actors with music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx and book by Jeff Whitty. The show was directed by Jason Moore with puppets designed and built by original cast member Rick Lyon. Avenue Q would go on to play over 2, performances, ranking 24th on the list of longest running shows in Broadway history, before moving to New World Stages.
Written around the premise that cute, brightly-coloured furry puppets can get away with a heck of a lot more than humans, Avenue Q raises questions about such adult issues as sexuality, racism, pornography, poverty and homelessness. Set in a rundown New York street and built around the theme of two couples, one straight the other gay, treading the rocky path towards true love, Avenue Q explores the meaning of life and our place in the universe through a series of highly amusing song sketches. But how it has escaped the attentions of the PC brigade is a puzzle in itself. What's On.
