Including artists such as Rigaud, Boucher, Nattier, Pierre, Carle van Loo, Gros and Jean-Baptiste Isabey, this exhibition, of nearly forty French drawings of male nude figures, all drawn between the late seventeenth and the late eighteenth centuries, is unprecedented in Britain. The Wallace Collection displays one of the greatest collections of eighteenth-century French paintings in the world, and these drawings from Paris will make an excellent complement to them. In many ways, The Male Nude will offer the visitor a new dimension and complete the jigsaw.

The history of nudity involves social attitudes to nudity in different cultures in history. It is not known when humans began wearing clothes, although there is some archaeological evidence to indicate that clothing may have become commonplace in human society around 72, years ago. Anthropologists believe that animal skins and vegetation were adapted into coverings as protection from cold, heat and rain, especially as humans migrated to new climates; alternatively, covering may have been invented first for other purposes, such as magic, decoration, cult, or prestige, and later found to be practical as well.
Im so happy to be exhibiting in the National Portrait Gallery for the second year running. I wanted to see more nudes of men painted by women as most that came to my mind were the other way around. I also think that at this moment in time we are surrounded by explicit and sometimes aggressive nude imagery so I think its important to make something to counterbalance that, something positive and celebratory.
