Primary liver cancer PLC is one of the common malignant tumors. Due to its insidious onset, lack of symptoms or nonspecific presenting symptoms in its early stage, and quick progression, PLC usually has been in its locally advanced stage or develops distant metastasis when it is confirmed; as a result, the management becomes extremely difficult and the prognosis usually is poor. If only symptomatic treatment is applied, the natural survival can be extremely short.

The use of DES declined after studies in the s showed that it was not effective in preventing these problems.
Hepatocellular carcinoma HCC is the most common type of primary liver cancer in adults, and is the most common cause of death in people with cirrhosis. It occurs in the setting of chronic liver inflammation, and is most closely linked to chronic viral hepatitis infection hepatitis B or C or exposure to toxins such as alcohol or aflatoxin. Certain diseases, such as hemochromatosis and alpha 1-antitrypsin deficiencymarkedly increase the risk of developing HCC.
